Over the years at Westside, I've given various services on the importance of community. Ive talked about my origin story of Westside as one where the church literally rescued us from homelessness, and how Westside has given me hope in my darkest hours. Community is one of our strongest themes, whether thats through religious education classes, building and grounds work days, or chatting after coffee hour. Each week we share Justice and Generosity opportunities where we reach out into the wider area to support our local community partners, such as Knox Pride and the Bottom. Personally Im looking forward to the Pasta and Bluegrass Festival to support Family Promise in August. This Sunday we will hear about an upcoming initiative to keep our community well supported and uplifted through the Caring Connections Committee. I think we can safely say that Westside tends to be a pretty social group of folk.

Back in the early spring, for our Annual Auction, I offered a small variety of crochet related items: a custom unicorn stuffed animal, a custom triceratops stuffed animal, and a crochet class. At the time of offering, I had assumed a 3 hour class would suffice for such an undertaking. I also didnt think so many people would be interested!!! Once again, our community showed up and proved the saying of what happens when we assume.

Through scheduling conflicts, I expanded the class offering to 3 dates across the summer for 3 hours per day following service. Silly me, I put it on the same day as potluck and Mystical Moments and by the time we were ready to crochet, I think we were all wiped. Its hard to learn new hobbies when your mind has been churning for hours with such fascinating conversation!!

For the foreseeable future, crochet class will now be held on the 3rd Sunday from roughly 12:30 to 2:30p in Room 1 (The SEED room). For members of the Board who would like to participate, please let me know!! I would be more than willing to find time to teach you how to crochet as well! The class, as sold in the auction, aims to teach basic stitches that will allow us to create a triangular cat toy and slightly more advanced stitches to make a crochet beanie (aka toboggan aka hat)!! I do provide hooks and yarn for these creations. Donations to the church will be accepted but are not necessary to enjoy this opportunity for community, crocheting, and conversation! Whether you've done it before and want to try again, never held a hook in your life, or crochet all the time, I look forward to spending our 3rd Sunday early afternoons with one another as we pick up this yarnwork.
