Past Years' Camp Information
9 am - 2 pm
Our camp is for children in grades K – 6.
(children 3 – 5 years may attend but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times).
Our summer camp is designed for maximum fun and learning. Campers begin their week with a sorting ceremony followed by crafts and games in Diagon Alley. During the sorting ceremony, campers are sorted into one of four houses: PhoenixFire (red, fire, hope), Stonedragon (gold, earth, faith), Windhorse (green, air, love), or Waverider (blue, water, joy) and given their schedule of classes. Friends and siblings can be placed in the same houses (or different, which is requested more for siblings!).
For the remainder of the week, campers attend their classes. Subjects range from Potions to Defense Against the Dark Arts. In Potions class, campers engage in age-appropriate science experiments. Defense Against the Dark Arts involves role playing. Other classes offered in the past include Musicology, Charms, Herbology, Divination and Care of Magical Creatures.
To further encourage UU principles, campers spend some time each day on a service activity. In the past, activities have ranged from picking up trash on the greenway behind the church to making chew toys for Smoky Mountain Service Dogs.There is a competition between houses to bring in canned goods which are given to a local food pantry. Campers are also awarded house points for acts such as kindness, good sportsmanship and creativity. At the end of each day, the house cup is awarded to the house whose campers have the most house points.
In our summer camp, there’s something for everyone. Whether your camper likes outdoor games, role-playing, crafts, music or just being around other kids in a fun, encouraging environment. We hope to see you there!
Along with their classes, campers play Westside's own version of Quidditch. The game of Quidditch is played outside on the Quidditch pitch with brooms (but no flying-- it’s far too dangerous!).
"Beaters" play a game of freeze tag with Nerf balls while "Seekers" play a game of keep-away with a bouncy ball while "Chasers" play a goal a game–all on the same field--simultaneously! It’s organized chaos, and the campers love it!
Besides having fun on the field, campers engage in the democratic process to help determine fair-play rules. They also practice other UU principles as they practice good sportsmanship on the field.

Curriculum is subject to change. Below are some examples of classes we've offered in the past.
Potions: In Potions class, campers engage in age-appropriate science experiments--like making slime!
Defense Against the Dark Arts: Overcoming fears (like a fear of spiders) by role playing.
Musicology: Learn songs with bells and percussion instruments.
Herbology: Learn about the plants in the woods around the church property, and how Native Americans may have used them.
Divination: Children learn to see hidden messages in everyday objects in the environment.
Care of Magical Creatures: Each year we have visitors from organizations that care for animals. In the past Zoo Knoxville, TN Raptor Center, and Humane Society of Tennessee Valley have taught campers about magical creatures in their care.
